Camila Cabello - C,XOXO
As I understand it, Camila Cabello, her team and Interscore Records were counting on such a reaction from the queer community. There is a moment - this community can smell fakeness a mile away, and here the smell is so strong that even Chanel No. 5 won't help.
We won’t point fingers at who the album’s sound and Camila’s entire rebranding (rhymes with Carly CBC) are based on, but the fact that just a couple of weeks ago “the original” released one of the best records in this genre in the last few years makes Cabello’s attempt simply ridiculous.
The album sounds very empty, chaotic and absolutely uninspiring. It rushes between genres, themes, samples [it must be unpleasant when, three weeks before the release of the album, the author of one of the samples, The-Dream, is sued for rape], attempts to present the material in different ways, in the hope that at least something will stick with the audience. And somewhere it offers an interesting sound or production choice, but the Velcro has already been stained by everything that came before or after, and no longer sticks.
You can take me at my word - I always praise when an artist tries something new. And I do commend Camila Cabello for taking a risk, but it was hardly a risk. After the release of the album "Familia" it was obvious that it was impossible to continue in the same spirit, and to perceive the near-electropop genre as something that can be easily and artificially rushed into seems a little insulting.
After such a rebranding, another rebranding is needed. Because "Esse quam videri".
